Carl Hornemann started a small company in Hanover in Germany  in 1838 and subsequently sold the company to Gunther Wagner who then decided to use the family coat of arms, a Pelikan, as the company’s image and registered it as a trade mark in 1879.

Pelikan were essentially an ink manufacturing company until they purchased the patent for the differentiated piston filling mechanism and started manufacturing the forerunners of the modern fountain pen.
